Ronaldsway was first used as an airfield in 1928 with passenger services to the UK starting in 1933. In a 1936 expansion of the airport, workers discovered a mass grave believed to hold the remains of soldiers who died during the Battle of Ronaldsway in 1275.
The original Manx Airlines operated between 1847 and 1958. The later Manx Airlines was an English-owned, Isle of Man-based airline that existed between 1982 and 2002. British Midland sold it ending direct flights to Heathrow airport for many years.
