St Columba
Castletown Road, Port Erin, IM9 6LN
St. Columba was born in Ireland in 521. He was the grandson of the Irish King Niall. He left Ireland not as a missionary but as an act of self-imposed penance. He had refused to hand over to the King a copy of the Gospels he had illegally copied, resulting in a battle, which Columba’s family won. Despite the victory he felt remorse for the deaths caused. He never returned, finally settling in Iona. One of the features of the Iona is a hill called “The Hill with its back to Ireland”.
The Church has etched and stained glass windows, and a modern feel. One of the seven Catholic Churches on the Island.
