The Promenade Gardens/Marine Gardens
The Promenade, Douglas
These Gardens also known as the Sunken Gardens were designed in the 1930s. Predominately flower gardens with raised beds they stretch the length of the Promenade and include benches and shelters. Many of these shelters now contain kiosks offering Ice-Cream, Teas and Takeaway food.
Some gardens are themed or connected to charities.
Within the Gardens lies an eight faced Sundial, a Memorial Garden, a bronze Cenotaph and Michael Sandle’s bas-relief (2002) depicting the Wreck of St George. Sir William Hillary, took part in the rescue of the sailors from the St George, and this inspired him to champion the National Lifeboat Service.
