Port Erin Bowling Club

Founded in 1983, a friendly club with currently around 60 members. Affiliated to the BCGBA (British Crown Green Bowls Association) and the IOMCGBA (Isle of Man Crown Green Bowls Association), with teams playing across the various leagues and cup competitions. Hosting a range of club competitions open to members, both social and competitive, as well as Open competitions open to bowlers from all over the Island, but also encourage social bowling for those looking for a less competitive experience.

The English Bowling Association was formed in 1903 with Crown Green Bowls being played for the first time in 1907.

Possibly the most famous story in lawn bowls is with Sir Frances Drake and the Spanish Armada. On July 18, 1588, Drake was involved in a game at Plymouth Hoe when he was notified that the Spanish Armada were approaching. His immortalised response was that “We still have time to finish the game and to thrash the Spaniards, too.” He then proceeded to finish the match which he lost before embarking on the fight with the Armada which he won.

King James I was fond of bowls and the game is mentioned by Shakespeare in his paly “Cymbeline”.
