Hango Hill/Mount Strange
Derbyhaven Road, Castletown, IM9
Probably dating back to the Bronze Age and a burial site. The name comes from the Norse “hanga-haugr”, meaning Gallows hill. The Derbys’ renamed it as Mount Strange in honour of their Derby heir Lord Strange however the original name remains in use.
Manx nationalist, Illiam Dhone who led the Manx Rebellion against the Derbys in 1651, was executed here by firing squad. The execution, on the 2nd of January 1663, was so badly carried out that the Derbys pardoned the other prisoners and paid William Christian’s family compensation.
A castellated summerhouse was erected on the site and its ruins still remain.
