Calf of Man
The Calf of Man, situated to the southwest of the Isle of Man, is the Island’s only obvious Islet. It is approximately a mile square of rough grazing and home to Loaghtan Sheep and various wildlife. It has its own tiny “Islet” Chicken Rock, on which was built a lighthouse, in 1875. Robert Stevenson, built two earlier lighthouses on the Calf itself and after a fire at Chicken Rock, a third was built in 1968. The main debarkation area is Cow Harbour, so called because of the historical farming trade. There is also South Harbour. Following the creation of the Manx Museum in 1951, the Calf became a Nature Reserve, Bird Sanctuary and Observatory.
Boat Trips regularly visit during the Summer months. It is forbidden to camp on the Calf but it is possible to arrange to stay at the Bird Observatory through Manx National Heritage. It is also possible to stay at Chicken Rock. Bring a picnic and have a wonderful day out.
