Snaefell Mountain Railway

The first mountain railway to be built in the British Isles. After careful planning, work began on lying the lines in the spring of 1893 and on the 7th of September 1893 the electric railway opened to take Victorian holiday makers up to the top of Snaefell. The tram regularly transported 20,000 passengers every season until the Great War.

The 2,000 foot ascent to the top of Snaefell is taken on a 5 mile long, 3′ 6″ gauge with overhead bow collectors attached to a 550 volt direct current. There is a café at the summit and special events such as Stargazing Evenings are held throughout the year.
